Getting started

How do I get started?

Reach out through the contact form or email me at hello@roecounseling.com. Tell me a little about what's going on and what you're looking for. I'll get back to you within one to two business days.

Do you offer a consultation call?

I don't use a scheduling link for new clients. I prefer to connect by email or contact form first so I can get a sense of what you're looking for before we talk. From there we'll figure out next steps together.

Are you taking new clients?

Availability changes. The best way to find out is to reach out. I'll let you know where things stand and we can go from there.

Do I need a referral?

No referral needed. You can reach out directly. If someone has referred you to me, please mention them when you reach out.

How long does it take to hear back?

I aim to respond within one to two business days. If you haven't heard back after that, feel free to follow up.

Therapy and EMDR

What is EMDR?

EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It's a therapy that helps your brain finish processing experiences that got stuck. It works differently than traditional talk therapy because it works with the body and nervous system, not just your thoughts.

Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?

No. EMDR doesn't require you to retell everything that happened. We work with how your nervous system is holding the memory, not a detailed verbal account of it. That's one of the things that makes it different.

How long does therapy take?

It depends on what you're working through and where you're starting from. Most people start noticing real shifts within a few months. Some people do shorter-term work around a specific issue. Others work with me longer. We'll figure out what makes sense for you.

What's the difference between therapy and an intensive?

Weekly therapy is steady and ongoing. An intensive is a longer, concentrated block of time that lets us go deeper and make more progress in a shorter period. Some people choose one or the other. Some people use both at different points.

Do you do virtual sessions?

Yes. All services are via telehealth. I see clients throughout Maryland and Delaware. You'll need a private space, reliable internet, and headphones are helpful.

How long are sessions?

Individual therapy sessions are 55 minutes. Consultation sessions are 60 minutes. Intensives run from 3 to 12 hours depending on the package, with breaks built in throughout.

Insurance and fees

Do you take insurance?

I am in-network with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, Cigna and United Healthcare. Coverage varies by plan, so please check your specific benefits before reaching out. EMDR Intensives are an electicve services that are not covered by insurance.

What if I have out-of-network benefits?

If you have out-of-network benefits, you may be able to get partial reimbursement through your insurance. I can provide a superbill, which is an itemized receipt with billing codes, for you to submit to your insurer directly.

How do I check my out-of-network benefits?

Call the member services number on the back of your insurance card and ask about outpatient mental health coverage and your out-of-network deductible and reimbursement rate.

What are your rates?

Please visit the Rates page for current session fees. If you have questions about fees before reaching out, feel free to email me directly.

How do I pay?

Payment is due at the time of service. I accept credit card, debit card, and HSA and FSA cards.

What is your cancellation policy?

I ask for 24 hours notice to cancel or reschedule. Late cancellations and no-shows are charged a fee. I require 7 days notice to cancel an EMDR intensive.

EMDR Intensives

How do I know if I'm ready for an intensive?

Intensives are designed for people who have sufficient day-to-day stability and coping capacity to engage in intensive processing work. If you're not sure, just reach out and we'll talk it through before committing to anything.

Is virtual EMDR actually effective?

Yes. Research supports it and I've seen it work really well. You'll need a private space, reliable internet, and headphones.

Will an intensive feel overwhelming?

Trauma work can bring up strong feelings. That's expected. Breaks are built in and I'll never push you past what you can handle. The goal is progress, not overwhelm.

Are intensives covered by insurance?

No, EMDR Intensives are an elective, non-covered service. See the Rates page for current pricing.

What happens after an intensive?

Every intensive ends with a follow-up integration plan. We make sure the work lands well and you know what to do in the days that follow. The EMDR Intensive Workbook is included with every session.

Can I do an intensive if I'm not currently in therapy?

Yes. Intensives are available to people who are not currently in weekly therapy. We'll assess readiness together and make sure you have the support you need going in and after.

For therapists

Do I need to be working toward certification to work with you?

No. If you've completed basic training and want support developing your clinical skills, that's enough. You don't have to be on any particular certification track.

What if I'm still pretty new to EMDR?

That's a great time to start consultation. Getting solid feedback early helps you build good habits from the beginning rather than having to unlearn things later.

How is consultation different from supervision?

Supervision is for pre-licensed clinicians and involves clinical oversight and documentation of hours toward licensure. Consultation is for licensed therapists and is a peer-level clinical discussion focused on skill development and case support.

Are you a board-approved supervisor in Maryland?

Yes. I am a board-approved supervisor for LGPCs in Maryland working toward their LCPC. Reach out if you're interested in supervision hours.
